Year / Event
1949

First California Model Legislature held for 2 days, headquarterred at the Senator Hotel. 145 delegates from 47 delegations.
John Raitt, Broadway singing star, sang at the Governor's Banquet (father of delegate).

1951 First African-American elected at Youth & Government.
1952 First Secretary of State.
1953 Delegates-in-Training Program (DIT) started.
1956 Delegates-in-Training take on specific tasks as Lobbyists, Hometown Reporters, Legislative Aids, etc.
1958 Lobbyist Program formalized as Legislature Advocates.
1959 First Asian-American elected Youth Governor.
1960 First female elected Youth Governor.
1962 Start up of Capitol Y Newspaper.
1967 Youth Senator from first Model Legislature becomes State Director of Youth & Government (Carl DuBois).
1968 Governor Ronald Regan actively serves on Youth & Government Statewide Committee.
1970 A historic Catholic & Protestant Ecumenical Service, first ever in the world, held at the Model Legislature.
1971 Startup of Midnight Worship/Friendship Service
1972

Startup of Youth Governor's Cabinet.
Startup of International Students Legislature.

1973

25th Anniversary Celebrated - 650 Delegates.
Startup of Court Program - 1st Supreme Court held.
First Training & Elections Conference held Statewide - Camp San Luis Obispo.

1974 First elected Youth Attorney General.
First Youth Delegate elected to serve on the Statewide Governing Board (then called Statewide Committee).
1975 First elected Youth Chief Justice.
Advisory Board established.
1977 Startup of American Delegates' Participation in International Students Legislature.
1979 Senator Hotel closed - moved headquarters to Holliday Inn with 800 participants.
Countries Model Legislature Program, now called Spring Conference, comes under the direction of the State Youth & Government Office.
1980 Annual Sustaining Campaign established and raised $3,600.00.
Endowment Fund established.
1981 Treasurer position changed to State Legislative Analyst.
1982 Startup of the Video News Program.
Alumni Association founded.
1983 Startup of Alumni Awards presentations.
1988 First Youth District Attorney.
1989 First Youth State Printer.
Annual Support Campaign breaks $100,000.00 mark.
1992 Outgrew Holiday Inn headquarters with 1,400 participants - moved to Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Startup of Sophomore Forum Program.
1993 Transitional Year - Youth Governor election event held at Camp Roberts, and again at the Model Legislature/Court, providing the first yearlong Youth Governor position.
1994 Endowment fund named in honor of Governor George Deukmejian.
1996 Startup Blue & Gold Legislatures.
First Youth Historian position.
Governor Deukmejian Endowment Fund reaches initial goal of $1 million.
1997 First Youth State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Annual Support Campaign breaks $150,000.00 mark.
1998 50th Anniversary celebrated - 2200 participants.
Youth Printer position changed to Youth Legislative Counsel.
Startup of National Issues Commission Program.
2001 California YMCA Youth & Government becomes an independent YMCA.
2002 California YMCA Youth & Government launches Model United Nations for grades 7-9.
