RECAP OF THE 60th ML/C

It may be hard to believe, but the 60th Model Legislature and Court is over. It was a great year all around. The feedback from the hotels, the Convention Center, the Supreme Court, and the Capitol was overwhelmingly positive. Each group mentioned that this may have been our best behaved and best dressed group in recent memory. Thanks go out to every adult, staff and advisors, who helped make this such an incredible year.

PLANNING FOR THE 61st ML/C

As strange as it may sound, now is the best time to start thinking about next year’s program. Melissa Malone and her advisor team are willing to work with you to help you with retention and recruiting for next year.

LOST AND FOUND

Once again, we are awash in lost & found items. The smelly socks and pillows have already been tossed, but scavengers are being kept at bay to give you a chance to claim your belongings. Items will be kept until March 25th.  If you claim something, we will be happy to send it to you but we require shipping charges to be paid in advance.  Contact Rolf at (650) 522-9622 or rolf@calymca.org. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity.

LEGISLATIVE ACTION ON BILLS

Youth Governor David Murdter Secretary of State AJ Rawls have compiled a final list of bills that were passed. This list will be sent out to lead advisors next week.

EVALUATIONS

Please check your email for the link to the Model Legislature/Court evaluation. Please ask your delegates and advisors to fill it out by March 18th. The evaluation only takes a few minutes and will really help us as we plan for the future of Y&G.  This is one of the reasons we ask you to provide email addresses for your delegates. Please make sure you add email addresses next year!

The remaining amount of $85 was due for every delegate and advisor who attended the Sacramento Model Legislature/Court. Refunds are not given to participants whose total fee was covered by scholarship monies.  Refunds are also not given to delegates expelled from the program.

If your YMCA still owes money to the Hyatt Regency or the Sheraton Hotel, please remit those funds directly to the appropriate hotel AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Thanks to all those Y's who are fully paid up. We appreciate it and so does the Hyatt and the Sheraton.

INTERN PROCESS

Each year, scores of Senior delegates don’t want to cut the cord and leave Youth & Government behind.  Several years ago we inaugurated the Intern Program where graduating seniors who are remaining in California for college or work may return and work with the sophomore forum delegates.  Response has been great, and the program has truly been blessed with wonderful interns.

In order to serve as an Intern, seniors must be selected by our Intern Advisor John Pratt, based on their application and three references.  One of the references must be from the Lead Advisor of their delegation.  Please do not give this application to delegates who you do not feel will be able to work with a group of 15 to 20 sophomores to offer leadership and support.  Intern candidates must attend Spring Conference where they will be interviewed by the Forum Staff and will receive some leadership training.  The program can take approximately 50 interns next year.

Interns must be able to act independently, set a good example, and work well with others.  We will be mailing intern applications directly to interested seniors. If you have graduating seniors who would make good interns please e-mail their contact information to johnpratt22@yahoo.com.

60th ANNIVERSARY & VIP DAY

An excited VIP Day crowd of 260 guests, YMCA leaders, donors, and alumni were treated to a great luncheon sponsored by CHEVRON, represented by longtime program supporter Jack Coffey. To highlight the 60th anniversary of Youth & Government, 10 previous youth governors, ranging from 1962 to 2006, gave talks on their experience in Y&G and the affect it has had on them since.  Even the most experienced staff and volunteers were stirred by the incredible impact this program has had.

YMCAs who bring their board and community leaders to Sacramento for this event report increased support and interest in "Youth and Government" and teen programming at their YMCA.  Plan on inviting your YMCA VIPs next year!

2008 ANNUAL SUPPORT CAMPAIGN ~ Building for the Future!

This year’s campaigners, made up of 243 volunteers, strapped on their tool belts and measured, sawed and hammered their way to raising 103% of goal for Youth & Government’s Annual Support Campaign. When the whistle blew we had raised a total of $289,410, with more pledges arriving daily!

A record breaking 158 Campaigners, or 65%, were Quota Busters!  19 built up to double quota, and 5 achieved triple quota or higher! Now, that’s what we call skyscraping!

The Victory Breakfast buffet was a muscle building, bountiful celebration for the crew in attendance at the Hyatt Hotel on Saturday, February 16.   Construction hats off to Linda Cooper and Doug Graham for engineering the great décor!
