UN General Assembly Declared April 2 “Autism Day” [04/02/2009]
|
April 2nd of each year was permanently designated the “United Nations World Autism Awareness Day” in a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 2007.
Autism is a pervasive disorder that affects tens of millions worldwide and with the caseload in California growing to what state officials and advocates say is of “epidemic proportions”.
The World Autism Awareness Day resolution by the United Nations encourages all nations to take measures to raise awareness about autism throughout society and to encourage early diagnosis and early intervention and expresses deep concern at the high rate of autism in children in all regions of the world.
World Autism Awareness Day, while focusing on autism as a growing global health crisis, also celebrates the talents and work of persons with autism.
The UN World Autism Awareness Day website is: http://www.worldautismawarenessday.org/site/c.egLMI2ODKpF/b.3917077/
